CAPS Asbury Park Scholars Take Home Honors
Students from CAPS Asbury’s New Jersey Drama and Forensics League (NJDFL) team earned awards with distinction at the January 31 tournament held at Lindenwold High School, showcasing their talent, preparation, and dedication to the performing arts.
Amaya Brewington (Grade 12) was awarded a medal for her Dramatic Oral Interpretation performance, delivering a powerful reading from the novel “Flowers for Algernon.” Bianca Moseley (Grade 12) also had an outstanding showing, earning awards in two categories: Celebratory Speech and Dramatic Oral Interpretation. Her dramatic interpretation featured readings of the poems “The World Is a Beautiful Place” and “Footnote to Howl.”
In addition to the award recipients, other CAPS Asbury scholars represented the school with strong performances. Casandra Martinez (Grade 9) presented a Dramatic Oral Interpretation reading from Coraline, while Daniel Lopez (Grade 11) competed in Impromptu Speaking, a category that challenges students to deliver a thoughtful speech or response with little to no preparation.
This marks CAPS Asbury’s fourth year participating in the NJDFL, a competitive, performance-based league exclusive to New Jersey. NJDFL seeks to foster a competitive and creative outlet for high school students in the area of theatre and speech for the purpose of networking these students, while providing a forum for competition and constructive feedback as well as encouraging growth and development in the theatre/speech arenas.
The league features a wide range of speech and drama categories, and students from select high schools across the state compete in all-day tournaments, often participating in multiple events.
With two more tournaments scheduled for February (2/7 – Eastern Regional High School; 2/21 – Mainland Regional High School), the CAPS Asbury NJDFL team looks forward to continuing a strong and successful season. The league is open to students in grades 9–12 and is always welcoming new members. Participation not only builds public speaking, critical thinking, and performance skills, but also strengthens college applications. Students interested in joining the team are encouraged to speak with Mr. Lyden or Ms. DiSabato.
The CAPS Asbury community is proud of all participating scholars for their hard work and dedication throughout the season.
